What to Do if Someone Has a Stroke
If you are with someone who you suspect may be having a stroke, you need to spring into action. Immediacy of response is essential. It is better to get help immediately than to wait and risk serious health consequences, or even death.
What to Do
Before you do anything else, call 911 and request an ambulance, even if you think you might be overreacting. Every second counts. Do not drive them to the hospital or make a doctor’s appointment – you won’t get there in time. Strokes occur very quickly (in most cases.)
Have the person sit or lie down. They might be confused or act like they don’t recognize you, or they may act like you are being ridiculous.
If the person can still eat and drink, see if they can swallow an aspirin while waiting. If you suspect a stroke is a result of an injury (and therefore bleeding in the brain), do not have them take an aspirin. Aspirin works as a blood thinner, so it can help if this is an ischemic stroke, but not if it is a stroke related to bleeding inside the brain.
